An ingenious designer has developed a Game Boy that can be connected in the same way as a Nintendo Switch or a Steam Deck. And the ingenuity is that it is horizontal contrary to the first of the name which was vertical
Obirux, the creator responsible for this reimagined version of Nintendo’s legendary portable system, has provided a design that continues in the same vein as the first while also implementing significant improvements to the overall package.
Because of its instantly recognizable vertical form factor, the Game Boy was an instant hit when it was originally released in 1989 and immediately became a favorite of gamers all over the world. The Game Boy Advance was Nintendo’s first portable device to include a horizontal screen and was released in the year 2001.
The game designer Obirux, who is known for returning to obsolete gaming platforms on a regular basis, had a great time recreating the glory days of the original Game Boy. This design, which is popularly referred to as the “Prototype” for the Game Boy DMG-0B (DMG standing for “Dot Matrix Game”), is an excellent illustration of the distinctive look of the Game Boy.
According to Obirux, the shells and plastics from two original Game Boys were melted down and used to build this design. By doing so, he was able to bring about a number of improvements of a very high standard.
The enhanced Game Boy was a product that fell prey to its own success.
Dot Matrix displays and PCB panels have been replaced with a newly designed PCB panel, and in addition, a kit for an IPS screen has been thrown in as a nice bonus feature. The featured image and the video both demonstrate how big of an improvement there is in both the visual clarity and the contrast on this brand new screen.
The revised Obirux console included an improved battery life as standard equipment. Because of this, the pack of four AA batteries has been switched out with a Li-Ion battery. As a consequence, there is not only greater space under the hood, but also more independence.
This is not the first time the artist has tried to create a portable gadget that combines Super Nintendo and Game Boy into a single unit with a very large screen; in other words, this is not his first time at the rodeo. All of these works are available for purchase as digital copies on his website. The availability of the horizontal Game Boy has been severely limited as a direct result of the console’s immense success.
